We recently attended the opening night of the Christmas at the Botanics and were treated to a spectacular light show. We hope our photos in this post do some justice to the exquisite illuminations that are on display. So, join us for a visual treat as we kick off the holiday season!
Even though it was raining, we found that it added an extra special ambience with the reflections of all the lights on the wet surfaces. Plus, we made sure to dress accordingly and used umbrellas so were able to stay dry and enjoy our time throughout the evening. We wholeheartedly agree with Billy Connolly when he said about Scotland, "there's no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing". As you can see below, even Santa was prepared.
We last attended the Christmas at the Botanics in 2019, and we were thrilled to see some new illuminations since we last visited.
Also new for 2022 is the 'Aurora' installation meant to invoke the 'Aurora Borealis'. Standing underneath it was quite hypnotizing. The photos simply don't convey the beauty of the illuminations, so we hope this brief video clip does a better job:
Evenings this time of year can be quite cool. Fortunately, there are some tasty food and beverage options to help you warm up. If you are just looking for a wee treat, you can toast marshmallows, sample some delectable churros, or have a deluxe hot chocolate. However, there are also street food vendors that offer more substantial options including Yorkshire pies, mac and cheese, and steak and fries to name just a few.
With a mixture of warm lights and fire-lit lanterns, I experienced a feeling of calm serenity as we walked along the illuminated trail. The 'poppies' hanging from the trees were particularly poignant.
We were quite pleased to see that there were some returning favourites. The tunnel of lights never fails to be awe-inspiring. And the light projections dancing across Inverleith House were simply delightful.
Here are a few more photos from our magical visit:
