A Visit to Illumin8 at the Falkirk Wheel
Last night, with a full moon shining overhead creating its own light show, we visited Falkirk for the debut of a new event - Illumin8 at the Falkirk Wheel. It was dusk when we first arrived at the Falkirk Wheel. The impressive size of the structure never fails to impress, and we stopped to admire it as we made our way from the car park down to the basin.
In addition to various activities that attendees could take part in, there was some delicious food options available ranging from full meals to sweet treats.
We found the event to be very family friendly. One activity that seemed popular with kids was the silent disco which was held inside the visitor centre.
They also had mini golf, waterzorbing (where kids could go inside an inflatable zorb ball and walk on water without getting wet), and a splash zone play area.
The illuminated trail was fun for all ages.
The highlight of the evening was the chance to see the Wheel in a much different way than we ever have before. Every 20 minutes, an engaging show started in the basin of the Falkirk Wheel that included music, lights, and lasers. While there were no boat tours in the gondolas, the Wheel was still in rotation, and that created a fascinating experience.

Overall, Illumin8 was a unique opportunity to see the Falkirk Wheel and its basin at night. Illumin8 is still going on this evening (27 September 2026), so be sure to check out the Scottish Canals website if you are looking to book a ticket to go or for other fun year-round activities.
