Get ready for a wee swashbuckling adventure as our Golden Retriever explorers, Walter and Arthur, help guide you on board the Galeón Andalucía as it makes port in Ayr, Scotland.

Our Golden Retriever explorers, Arthur and Walter, stand by the Spanish Galleon, Galeón Andalucía, at Ayr harbour, with Spanish and Scottish flags against a blue sky.

Thursday was the first day that visitors could climb onboard the Galeón Andalucía after it arrived in Ayr, and we were eager to check out such a unique ship. It is a replica of a 17th century Spanish Galleon and construction was completed in 2010. Since then, it has undertaken voyages around the world - sailing the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, as well as the Mediterranean, the Red Sea, the Sea of China, the Aegean, the Bosporus, and the Caribbean. According to the Spanish non-profit organisation that built and runs the ship, the Nao Victoria Foundation, the Galeón Andalucía has sailed over 150,000 nautical miles!

The Nao Victoria Foundation highlights that a Spanish Galleon was “an armed trade boat with payloads ranging from 500 to 1,200 tons and lengths between 40 to 60 meters (130 to 200ft.). They carried up to 150 people aboard and were designed to cross the Atlantic and Pacific oceans with maximum efficiency”. Furthermore, “the galleons had to travel as part of a fleet, choosing the appropriate navigation dates and being escorted by army vessels to protect them against possible pirate and corsair attacks”.

The Galeón Andalucía is a great educational tool for both the crew who get to travel and experience what it is like to sail a Spanish Galleon and visitors who can briefly tour the ship. It certainly helps you imagine what life must have been like on a Spanish Galleon in the 1600s.

Experts (including historians and naval engineers) spent years undertaking historical research to create a replica that was as close to the original as possible. Fortunately, there were excellent written and iconographic sources that they were able to consult. The resulting ship is quite spectacular to behold in person! Here are some photos from our tour:

The Galeón Andalucía will be at its South Harbour Street location until 23 August. While you can pay in person, we recommend checking out the Nao Victoria Foundation's official website for more information- including booking in advance.

Lastly, if you are looking for something more suitable for landlubbers, be sure to book one of our Edinburgh walking tours. We’ve been known to spot a pirate or two while out on our ‘explore and discover’ tours around the city. 😉

Until next time- Explore & Discover!

The photo is framed in a gold circle. The text asks people to consider buying us a cup of coffee on our Ko-fi account if they enjoy the place we bring them to around Scotland and would like to help keep the stories coming.
